What Are Polarized Sunglasses And How Do They Work?

My eye doctor told me to get a pair of these for my light sensitivity. What makes them so special?

it’s a little complicated to describe without pictures. light waves vacillate at a right angle to the direction of propagation, so they travel on a flat path that is like a tiny ribbon. this is an over-simplification, of course. polarized lenses only allow light waves to pass if the little ribbons are close to being parallel. they filter out a lot of light, and can take glare off of shiny objects like glass, metal or water. that’s why fishermen and sailors wear them. one interesting thing you can observe with them is that if you put one polarized lens over the other, and put the polarization a quarter turn apart, no light passes through the two lenses.
