My daughter got head lice at camp. I used the otc stuff but it didn’t work, so I colored her hair, then I did the overnight mayo treatment and then have spent hours everyday picking out nits. I would not wish this on my worse enemy!!! So far I haven’t seen anymore nits. I wonder if it is because I colored her hair?

I don’t know. But I have heard that lice are repelled by Head & Shoulders shampoo. Who knows? Lice are just plain nasty. When I had 5 children at home still, one of my children contracted lice from someone at school. Can you imagine doing this with 5 little heads, and then all the bedding, personal items, etc???
I feel your pain.
Make sure you do the follow-up treatment on the box (even if you think it didn’t work.) I can’t remember if it is 7, 10 or 14 days. But if you miss this step, they will probably return; even if you think you got all the nits. Uck. Sorry. I empathize.
The hair color was probably toxic to them, but head lice love clean hair…and hate dirty hair, their nits won’t stick to dirty hair…
…just fyi
Sometimes dye is strong enough to kill the lice. The main thing is to sterilize all surfaces in your home- throw out brushes & other hair accessories, spray RID all over bed linens & couches.
The OTC treatment has to be twice, use it once, wait 3 days and use it again. This kills any lice that hatch from the nits you may have missed after the 1st treatment. It may be possible that the chemicals in the hair dye killed off the second hatching.
Its false my daughter had head lice too and I tried the the RID shampoos and worked also if you do try the RID buy another bottle and use it two weeks after the first treatment and the lice should be gone. You also can try white vinegar just pour it all over her head leave it one for an hour and then rinse you should do this at least once a week for three weeks.
Good luck!!!
First, lice like dirty hair so and they can’t stick to clean hair as easily.
Second, the vinegar sounds like a great way to get your kid to kill you..
Far easier is to use a lice prevention shampoo or spray like Rosemary Repel or Lice good-bye. Its ok to use it everyday http://www.fairytaleshaircare.com
